Ambreen Shah will discuss the importance of design to the UK economy, design sector diversification, design education and the Design Council’s #DesignIsVital campaign. Ambreen is a social researcher by background having completed her PhD on South Asian Muslims: Adjustments to British Citizenship in 2003. She worked for the Big Lottery Fund (now National Lottery Community Fund) for 12 years, supporting evaluation, policy development of multi-million funding programmes and eventually as Deputy Director supporting delivery of £500m of grant funding in England to the voluntary and community sector. After a couple of years off raising a family Ambreen joined the Design Council in 2018 as Director of Policy, Research and Communications. A key part of this role is to evidence and communicate effectively the value of design to the wider economy. With the launch of our new strategy in March 2020, this is in particular to addressing health inequalities, sustainable living and promoting the importance of design skills. Design Council’s mission is to make life better by design. Design Council work with people to create better places, better products and better processes, all of which lead to better performance. they commission pioneering evidence-based research, develop ground-breaking programmes and deliver influencing and policy work to demonstrate the power of design and how it impacts three key areas of the economy: business innovation, places and public services.
