Back by popular demand after a sold out workshop earlier in the year, Learning from the greats is aimed at photographers who want to take better photographs, whatever their current ability…photographs that arrest the attention of the viewer and sustain their interest and enjoyment over time.

In this webinar, Jim will demonstrate 12 different ways to create great images by illustrating each with 8-10 images created by some of 'the great' B&W documentary photographers and exploring ‘why they work’. Jim’s primary goal is to inspire you to pick up your camera and put some of these ideas into practice.

Over 50 different photographers are featured using over 120 photographs which have been personally chosen by Jim; in curating the selection Jim has sought to assemble a set of images which, for the most part, he is hoping you are less familiar with.

The images are from around the world and span almost a century, from a Lewis Hine image created in the US in 1908, exposing child labour in the cotton mills, to an image created almost 100 years later by Vanessa Winship as part of her Black Sea project. It’s, inevitably, a personal selection but it encompasses many of 'the legends' of documentary photography including Kertesz, Koudelka, Cartier-Bresson, Brandt, Groebli, Bischof, Larrain, Killip, and many more. This webinar also includes wonderful images by documentary photographers that you are likely less familiar with including Berenice Abbott, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Colin Jones, Margaret Bourke-White, Ruth Orkin, Myron Davies, Miklos Rev, Andrejs Grants, Sabine Weiss, Arnold Newman, and many others.

As part of the webinar, Jim will include details of recommended books, galleries, and further resources for you to explore.

Jim’s breadth of experience as a widely featured and award-winning photographer, as a tutor at the Leica Academy, as an extensive collector of photographic prints and books, and as Chairman of the V&A Museum'sPhotographs Acquisition Group’, makes him uniquely qualified to lead this webinar and to inspire you with his passion for documentary photography, and the work of 'the greats'.
