The relationship with our clothes and the products we invest in is fundamentally changing. Across many categories, we have demonstrated an appetite to shift away from traditional ownership to newer ways of accessing products.

The life span of fashion products is being stretched as preowned, refurbished, repaired, and rental business models continue to evolve. This shift is driven by growing consumer desire for variety, sustainability, and affordability. Already, the resale market is predicted to overtake fast fashion within ten years.

Ahead of Black Friday, we have invited industry experts in the world of resale, rental, and repair to challenge current ways of working and discuss how brands can adapt to new ownership models. We will cover everything, from changing consumer behaviours that put sustainability at the front, to how to make a profit as a brand without pushing continuous consumption.

Nina van Volkinburg (Co-founder & CEO, Reture)

Nina Van Volkinburg, PhD is the CEO and co-founder of RETURE, a digital platform which connects clients to a global network of world class fashion designers, to upcycle their underused garments into unique fashion pieces. RETURE’s mission is to make upcycling the most desirable choice for modern-day consumption by extending the life of garments, preserving human craft in the digital age and rediscovering local communities. It is the first upcycling marketplace in the premium fashion space. She is a trained ethnographer, having completed her doctorate with the University of Exeter in September 2020 researching the effects of digital disruption on the value creation processes within the fashion industry. Callum was also voted one of the top young engineers in the world for his work in AI, and has collaborated with some of the biggest fashion retailers in the UK as part of Streamoid. The platform will change the way the fashion industry works with surplus materials — rescuing valuable stock that would otherwise end up in warehouses or landfills, and reducing the environmental footprint of textiles. From brands and designers to manufacturers, factories, and institutional partners, the materialist enables creative, commercial and environmental collaboration across the entire industry. After graduating from University of Leeds in 2016, Liv launched her first business in 2017. The Lacuna Collection offers financial and fulfilment solutions for global luxury brands and emerging designers.
