Research has shown that you have a 30% chance of dying from heart or artery disease. The good news is that heart disease is, in most cases, completely preventable. Yet so widespread is this epidemic that we almost take it for granted and fail to protect ourselves. Many cultures do not experience a high incidence of strokes or heart attacks (e.g. Japanese).

In the US and UK, deaths from cardiovascular disease (CVD) reached a peak in the 1960s and since then the death rate has remained high but is reducing slowly. Heart disease it is still the number one cause of death globally. More people die annually from CVD than any other cause. Even more worrying is the fact that heart disease is occurring earlier and earlier. Even teenagers can be expected to show signs of atherosclerosis (arterial blockages) now. Obviously, something in our lifestyle, diet or environment changed radically over the last 60 years.

There were many factors that contributed to the significant rise in heart disease in the 20th century. We now know that saturated fat in our diets was not the causative factor, although this is what scientists believed for much of the period from the 1960s through to recent years. There have been many recent research papers confirming that saturated fats do not cause heart disease. The contributory factors were smoking, dietary changes (different fats and more sugar), more sedentary jobs (due to technology and reduced manual labour), less activity (labour saving household appliances) and a general increase in stress levels.
