Magnum Gallery is delighted to present Magical Realism, an exhibition featuring the work of Yael Martínez alongside Cristina de Middel and Bruno Morais.
Martínez’s work addresses fractured communities in his native Mexico. He often works symbolically to evoke a sense of emptiness, absence and pain suffered by those affected by organized crime in the region. His Firefly project suggests an idea around humanity’s ability to “transform black energy into a positive energy”. To illustrate this concept, Martínez alters his photographs with pin pricks, allowing strands of light to bleed through the darkness.
Cristina de Middel and Bruno Morais’ project, Boa Noite Povo, entirely shot in Brazil, is a mix of archival imagery, directed animal action, night photography and plastic interventions of ephemeral pieces investigating the classical Nature vs. Culture debate, more relevant than ever in the current (post) pandemic world.
