Maria Ressa, winner of the 2021 Nobel peace prize, will talk to Guardian editor-in-chief, Katharine Viner.

Ressa faces 100 years behind bars in her home country. The Filipino-American journalist has spent decades tracking disinformation networks seeded by her own government, spreading lies to its own citizens laced with anger and hate. Her commitment to speaking truth to power has landed her in trouble with the most powerful man in the country: President Duterte.
Despite multiple arrest warrants against her, and the threat of years in prison, she continues to fight for democracy. In a new book, How to Stand Up to a Dictator, she lays bare how we are all in the grip of untruths and propaganda, from Duterte’s drug wars, to America’s Capitol Hill, to Britain’s Brexit, to state cyber warfare, to Facebook.
Along with the Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov, Ressa won the Nobel peace prize in 2021 for her “efforts to safeguard freedom of expression”. In her own words: ‘Freedom of the press is the foundation of every single right you have as a Filipino citizen. If we can’t hold power to account, we can’t do anything.’ In this special livestreamed event she and Viner will discuss propaganda, disinformation and the vital need to protect our democratic freedoms.
