Jamie Hawkesworth and Hannah Buckman explore notions of Home at Nicer Tuesdays July Online
Home represents something slightly different depending on the individual. For some, it’s a geographical location one feels safe, while for others, the word triggers more loaded thoughts – thoughts of cultural identity, belonging and heritage. At July’s Nicer Tuesdays, we welcome two creative powerhouses to the online stage to explore this matter in their unique way. First up, we’ll hear from illustrator Hannah Buckman for a ten-minute talk followed by a Q&A with the audience. Then, we’ll hand over the mic to photographer Jamie Hawkesworth who will tell us about his 13 year-long journey trekking the length of the British Isles to document his home country. Kicking off at 6 pm BST on Tuesday 27 July 2021, the hour-long creative event provides insight into some of the most exciting talents of today.

Jamie Hawkesworth
A documentary and fashion photographer of note, Jamie hit headlines with his very first photography project back in 2010 titled Preston Bus Station. Completed while still at university, the documentary series capturing the Brutalist bus station and the people who use it put Jamie on the map as one of the most exciting rising photographers in the UK. Since then he’s continued to astonish, working in both the commercial and fine art sphere. He’s shot campaigns, editorials and catalogues for the likes of Vogue, Fantastic Man, JW Anderson, Loewe, and The New York Times Style Magazine, just to name a few. Along the way, The New York Times dubbed him “one of the most talented fashion photographers of his generation” while i-D referred to his images as being “defined by their romantic warmth, simple beauty and emotional openness.” At July’s Nicer Tuesdays, the photographer will take us through his latest release, a book titled The British Isles, published by Mack. In it, he delves into the notion of Britishness and what it means to the people who live here, taking the viewer up and down the country in a ravishing display of photographic glory. Hannah Buckman
We first got to know Hannah Buckman’s bold and beautiful work through editorial commissions for gal-dem. Having studied illustration at Camberwell College of Arts, the London-based illustrator has developed an enigmatic style that pulls the viewer further into the story, tempting the reader into engaging with the narrative at hand. Known for her original style which has seen her garner clients including The New York Times, The Guardian, Harper’s Magazine, LA Times, Culture Trip, The British Library and many more. Hannah’s work is also coveted for her celebratory depictions of people of colour and their experiences, a focus that resonates with viewers far and wide. Taking us through the details of her charming yet poignant work at July’s Nicer Tuesdays Online, Hannah will also touch on her latest creative endeavours which include further investigations into the realm of fine art, and how she incorporates themes of identity through her evocative, story-led images.
