A much-loved winter scene comes to life
In a National Gallery first, you are invited to join us as larger-than-life characters step out of a masterpiece and embark on a magical Christmas adventure. A tale of friendship, mystery and festive spirit set in the 1600s.
This 60-minute musical show will unfold in the National Gallery's theatre and is set inside the imagined world of one of the Gallery’s paintings: Hendrick Avercamp's ‘Winter Scene with Skaters near a Castle’.
Transforming the National Gallery theatre into a wintry scene
In this entertaining family-friendly show, we are transported from the shores of the icy lake in Avercamp's painting into the depths of an enchanted winter forest.
We invite you to adventure along with two children, Frederick and Maaike, as we unite to defeat a frosty foe scheming to ruin Christmas.
Along the way, we meet an industrious squirrel, a bold badger, an honourable deer and, of course, Father Christmas.
With the help of our forest friends, the power of love and some seasonal cheer, we hope to save the day and Christmas too!
Expect songs, dance, and lots of laughter.
Information about tickets and your visit
Tickets are required for everyone in your party except for babes in arms (children under 1-year-old who do not require their own seat). Please note, seating is not pre-assigned, and you will be seated by members of the cast who will fill the theatre from the front row back, leaving no empty seats. No seat has an obstructed view.
Children must be accompanied by at least one adult. You can show your ticket on your phone or you can print it at home.
Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your booked performance.
Visit our Christmas Pop-Up Café for delicious refreshments before the show.
Please note, this is a theatre production, not a Grotto experience. Father Christmas will appear in the show for a singalong finale.
