Behind the scenes with British Book Awards-winning authors and their publishers.

About this event
Join us on the 8th of November for behind-the-scenes access to one of The British Book Awards' winning authors. This evening’s author will be Clare Chambers, joined by her literary agent Judith Murray and her publicist Virginia Woolstencraft, and chaired by Alice O’Keeffe, books editor of The Bookseller Magazine.
Ever wonder how award-winning books make their way from the author’s mind into your hands, or how authors found their agents or publishers in the first place? In this new salon series, The British Book Awards (aka the Nibbies) bring you winning authors from the 2022 ceremony in conversation with members of their publishing teams, shedding light on all that goes into the creation of your favourite titles.
This evening, Clare Chambers, winner of The British Book Award for Pageturner joins us to talk about her book Small Pleasures. She'll be joined by her literary agent Judith Murray from Greene & Heaton and her publicist Virginia Woolstencraft, who helped make Small Pleasures the word-of-mouth success of last year.

ABOUT CLARE CHAMBERS
Clare Chambers’ first job after reading English Literature at Hertford College, Oxford, was working for Diana Athill at Andre Deutsch. Clare’s first novel UNCERTAIN TERMS was published by Diana at André Deutsch in 1992 and she is the author of five other novels. SMALL PLEASURES, her first work of fiction in ten years, became a word-of-mouth hit on publication and was selected for BBC 2’s ‘Between the Covers’ book club.

ABOUT SMALL PLEASURES
1957, the suburbs of South East London. Jean Swinney is a journalist on a local paper, trapped in a life of duty and disappointment from which there is no likelihood of escape. When a young woman, Gretchen Tilbury, contacts the paper to claim that her daughter is the result of a virgin birth, it is down to Jean to discover whether she is a miracle or a fraud. As the investigation turns her quiet life inside out, Jean is suddenly given an unexpected chance at friendship, love, and – possibly – happiness. But there will, inevitably, be a price to pay.
