Behind the scenes with British Book Awards-winning authors and their publishers.

About this event
Join us on the 7th of December for behind-the-scenes access to some of The British Book Awards' winning authors. This evening we’ll be joined by authors Carl Anka and Phil Earle in conversation with their editors and chaired by Caroline Carpenter, children’s editor and deputy features editor of The Bookseller Magazine.
Ever wonder how award-winning books make their way from the author’s mind into your hands, or what that sacred relationship between author and editor is truly like? In this new salon series, The British Book Awards (aka the Nibbies) bring you winning authors from the 2022 ceremony in conversation with members of their publishing teams, shedding light on all that goes into the creation of your favourite titles.
This evening, Carl Anka, co-author with Marcus Rashford of the double-Nibbie winning You Are a Champion; and Phil Earle, author of When the Sky Falls and winner of The British Book Award for Children’s Fiction, will discuss their books and the power of reaching young people with writing. They’ll be joined by their editors Cate Augustin and Charlie Sheppard, to reveal the ins and outs of that ever-important relationship between an author and their editor.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS:
Carl Anka is a London-born journalist and broadcaster who likes his tea with milk and one sugar. He has written for BBC, Guardian, VICE, NME, GQ and BuzzFeed among other publications online and in print and specialises in writing about pop culture, video games, films and football. Currently a reporter for sports media group The Athletic, covering Manchester United, he is the host of the Talk of the Devils podcast and is scared of talking on the phone.
Along with Marcus Rashford, Carl is the co-writer of You Are a Champion: How to Be the Best You Can Be – a positive and inspiring guide for life for young readers.
Phil Earle is slightly obsessive about children’s fiction, so it isn’t a surprise that he decided to try and write some himself. His debut novel, Being Billy, was nominated for a dozen awards, including the Carnegie Medal and the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize. He lives with his family in London, writes on the bus and has no plans to write a novel for adults, although he might read one. One day.
ABOUT YOU ARE A CHAMPION
It's hard to know what is possible until you start. You have to be able to dream big and be prepared to work towards your dreams. Good things take time. I've achieved a lot, but it didn't come in one go - big things rarely happen overnight, and good things rarely happen as if by magic . . .
Marcus Rashford is famous worldwide for his skills both on-and-off the pitch - but before he was a Manchester United and England footballer, and long before he started his inspiring campaign to end child food poverty, he was just an average kid from Wythenshawe, South Manchester. Now, Marcus Rashford MBE wants to show YOU how to achieve your dreams, in this positive and inspiring guide-for-life.
No matter who you are and no matter where you come from, every single person in the world has the potential to be a champion. In You Are a Champion, the nation's favourite footballer gives you the tools you need to reach your full potential, showing you how to be the very BEST version of yourself you can be.
ABOUT WHEN THE SKY FALLS
Inspired by a true story. It's 1940, and Joseph has been packed off to stay with Mrs F, a gruff woman with no great fondness for children. To Joseph's amazement, she owns the rundown city zoo where Joseph meets Adonis, a huge silverback gorilla. Adonis is ferociously strong and dangerous, but Joseph finds he has an affinity with the lonely beast. But when the bombs begin to fall, it is up to Joseph to guard Adonis's cage should it be damaged by a blast. Will Joseph be ready to pull the trigger if it comes to it?
