Susie Orbach, psychotherapist, feminist icon and author of Bodies and Fat Is A Feminist Issue
This month we welcome a powerhouse panel – Ione Gamble, Sandra Igwe, and Susie Orbach – writers, experts, and activists, who refuse to be marginalised, mistreated, and subjected and who empower others to fight back. Do you have bodily autonomy? Who touches your body – and how? How do you feel about your body? Why? How do you want to feel? How do you inhabit your body? What have you changed? How do you protect your body? How do you nourish it? How do you educate yourself about your body? How far would you go to pursue an ideal – and whose ideal is it? What about when your needs are not met? And what about when it’s life or death?
Join us to reframe the feminist fight for bodily autonomy, break down barriers and celebrate ways to liberate and be liberated.
Ione Gamble is a writer and editor based in London. She founded Polyester zine when she was twenty and the publication has gone on to become one of the world’s leading voices in intersectional feminist publishing. Focusing on the rise of social media and identity politics, Ione and Polyester have built a community of strong-minded, marginalised people determined to carve their place in a world that continues to ignore them. She has been named an editor shaping the future of magazines by i-D magazine, and a New Debutante by Tatler. She is also the host of The Polyester Podcast. Poor Little Sick Girls is her debut book.
Sandra Igwe is the Founder of The Motherhood Group, a platform and safe space to support the Black motherhood experience, through events, workshops, peer-to-peer support, collaborative projects, training, advocacy and campaigning. Sandra is co-chair of the National Inquiry into Racial Injustice in Maternity Care and a trustee of Birthrights charity.
Professor Susie Orbach - the therapist who treated Princess Diana for her eating disorders - is the founder of the Women's Therapy Centre of London; a former columnist for The Guardian; a visiting professor at the London School of Economics; and the author of 1978 best-seller Fat is a Feminist Issue. She is probably the most famous psychotherapist to have set up couch in Britain since Sigmund Freud. She lives in London.
