Join Salena Godden and Louisa Young on the 3rd of October as part of our Under The Covers Series.
About this event
Under the Covers is an illuminating series of talks in which Ella Berthoud, bibliotherapist and co-author of The Novel Cure: An A-Z of Literary Remedies puts an author, artist or person of note onto the couch, and asks them all about the books that made them – what they read as a child and a teenager, what they read now - and all about their lives and what they have just been writing, painting or performing.
About the Author :
Salena Godden is one of Britain’s best-loved poets and performers. She is also an activist, broadcaster, memoirist, and essayist and is widely anthologized. She has published several volumes of poetry, the latest of which was Pessimism is for Lightweights, and a literary childhood memoir, Springfield Road. Mrs. Death Misses Death is her debut novel. A BBC Radio 4 documentary following Godden's progress on the novel over twelve months was broadcast in 2018.
About Mrs. Death, Misses Death :
A powerful and darkly funny look at our relationship with race, class, and mortality – the debut novel from renowned performance poet Salena Godden.
Mrs. Death has had enough. She is exhausted from spending eternity doing her job and now she seeks someone to unburden her conscience. Wolf Willeford, a troubled young writer, is well acquainted with death, but until now hadn’t met Death in person – a black, working-class woman who shape-shifts and does her work unseen.
About Louisa Young :
Louisa Young writes novels, songs, biography, memoir, children’s books, cultural history, columns in the Observer, and procrastination on Facebook. She is currently engaged in 1) an opera libretto based on her most recent novel, Twelve Months and a Day, which is a poignant, funny, readable, break-your-heart-and-mend-it tale of love, death and matchmaking ghosts and 2) a ten-volume auto-fiction about theft, women, power, sex, and the twentieth century. Her work is published in 36 languages.
She’s also a part-time agony aunt, former busker, mother, and ex-journalist. She's powered by history, hope, and the need to reconcile pure feminism with insane romanticism.
