About this event
In 2021, it felt like we experienced an overnight technological revolution.
From the fringes of the internet, swathes of new terms became mainstays in the marketing press and mainstream media alike, rushing to alleviate the tensions of our new reality in a mid- to post-Covid world. Bitcoin’s market value surpassed $1 trillion, the NFT gold rush was kicked off by Beeple, and Meta’s rebrand from Facebook hailed in conversations around the metaverse.
We saw Google searches for web3, NFTs, cryptocurrencies and the metaverse spike, as people rushed to understand what any of this actually meant – for both individuals and society. Was decentralisation going to change the way we banked? Would NFTs be the next brand channel? How long until we’re all living in VR?
But it’s time for a reality check.
Because web3 is still a long way off. Research from We Are Social shows that 85% of social media users globally don't understand what web3 is. Just 13% would consider buying an NFT. And at the beginning of this year, less than 15% owned cryptocurrencies – though that might have changed in the wake of the ‘Crypto Bowl’.
That’s not to say we should be sitting on our laurels: web3 will be upon us before we know it. It’ll undoubtedly transform the way we work, play and socialise. But it’s time for brands to stop fuelling the flames of meaningless hype, and take a step back. This isn’t about reach or driving fame: it’s about authentically adding value to individuals and societies by making our transition to the next phase of the internet as painless as possible.
This two-part global webinar series is aimed at brands looking to figure out where their place lies within the web3 landscape. You will need to sign up for both tickets if you wish to attend both sessions.
