Organised by the Design Museum
Create your own lamp inspired by our display PLATFORM: Bethan Laura Wood. Led by designer Holly Rollins, explore cultural stories, research methods and hands-on modelling to design and build a functional lamp prototype that embodies personal and collective narratives.
What to expect
PLATFORM is an annual display dedicated to showcasing contemporary design practice. The first display in a series presents the fascinating work of multidisciplinary designer Bethan Laura Wood. Bethan is fascinated by the connections we make with the everyday objects that surround us. Her work is characterised by material investigation, artisan collaboration and a passion for colour, detail and decoration.
In this workshop, you will explore key themes in Bethan Laura Wood’s work – adornment, desire, modernity, tradition and the beauty in the everyday – and how functional design can incorporate personal narrative and storytelling.
Designer Holly Rollins will introduce her own practice and research-based design methodology. You will be encouraged to delve into multiple references and gather inspiration for your design, exploring storytelling and memory around objects and reflecting on the connection as a starting point for your lamp design.
In the second half of the workshop, you will build your own prototype using modelling materials and decorative tools provided. At the end of the session, participants will have a chance to share their designs with the group and discuss how lighting can act as a cultural conduit.
Each participant will leave with a unique and functional lamp prototype and a deeper understanding of how design can illuminate emotional connections, cultural storytelling, and aesthetic exploration.
