This is a key, dynamic editing and writing role in the Telegraph's Culture team, working in support of the Telegraph's Culture Editor. The successful candidate will help manage and generate the Telegraph's overall digital culture coverage; as well as film, TV and pop-culture coverage across all products, print and online. The Associate Culture Editor is expected to bring the best and most pertinent interviews, features, comment pieces and reviews to the Telegraph’s culture coverage.
Key responsibilities
  • Working with the Culture Editor to plan the daily digital culture coverage and the long-term arts and culture content with a digital focus
  • Commissioning Film, TV, music and pop-culture coverage across all print and digital products, in support of the Culture Editor and other section heads.
  • Helping to ensure the digital team generates agenda-setting content that generates subscriptions and registrations and furthers reader engagement.
  • Taking the lead in the Culture Editor’s absence
  • Writing in depth and reactive pieces across the arts.
  • Flexibility to work varying shifts on a seven day rota, including some weekend work and early starts.
  • Helping ensure the digital culture content is market-leading, on budget, meets targets and is in line with the wider Telegraph strategy and brand.
  • Liaising with the social media, video and new formats teams to ensure that culture content is optimised in these areas to increase engagement and drive subscriptions.

Essential skills required for the role
  • A thorough in-depth knowledge of both high and pop culture, with particular strengths in film, TV and music.
  • Excellent editing skills: ability to provide expert, fool-proof briefs, wrangle structurally flawed copy into perfect prose and copy edit with precision.
  • In-depth experience of social media promotion of journalism.
  • Superb and speedy writing skills.
  • A full contacts book of PRs and close relationships across the cultural industry
Additional skills useful for the role
  • A specialist knowledge of rock and pop music
  • Experience creating and realising both print and digital vision and strategies.
  • Experience working in depth with digital analytics
