Job Introduction

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Content team as a Commercial Manager on a 12 month contract.
The Commercial Manager both acquires directly and supports the Commercial Director, Drama in identifying and acquiring the most commercially attractive content from producers for BBCW worldwide to distribute internationally across all media.
This role will also involve working closely with the Head of Content (Drama), BBCW Regions and central business divisions.


Role Responsibility

Accountabilities
  • The Commercial Manager will be responsible for liaising with the Creative Services teams to optimise marketing activities including launching of the content at MIP-TV, MIPCOM and BBC SHOWCASE .
  • The Commercial Manager will research and identify drama projects that are; in development, in pre-production or pre-broadcast stages – that have international & revenue potential.  The role therefore involves assessing programme pitches, debating ideas at concept stage, reading treatments, reading scripts or analysing key talent attached to projects.
  • To decide on, or recommend as appropriate, the right level of investment (working closely with the Editorial & Commercial Executives, Sales Regions and finance teams) and directly manage and negotiate the acquisition of rights, terms and deliverables directly with producers on an agreed range of output across the Drama  genre.
  • Maintain direct and trusted relationships with select drama production companies - working closely with a variety of contacts including executive producers, production managers,  heads of development, finance & business affairs managers
  • To hold regular development slate meetings and track progress of select drama producers. These development relationships to be at the discretion of the Commercial Director, Drama but to be managed on a daily basis by the Drama Manager.
  • Supporting the Commercial & Editorial Executives and Team Co-ordinator in their work ensuring that the logging and maintaining of all programme data within CILS and SPIN for title tracking and end of month reporting. 
  • With support from the Editorial Executive, this role will be responsible for communicating the progress and trends of development projects across their drama production relationships.
  • With support from the Commercial Executive, this role will also be required to design production funding plans that may take into account potential co-production partners, pre-sale partners, sales revenue, tax incentives, etc.
  • Preparing investment cases including forecasts and sales histories showing how each title will be exploited internationally.  Demonstrate awareness of consideration of any versioning/special requirements required on each title.
  • Work with Commercial Rights to resolve any clearance issues as well as overseeing any compliance issue management on titles, which often arise when selling a title to the UK secondary market, DVD, or digital platforms.
  • Ensure the timely communication of product pipelines, advising Sales and Channels teams and IP Management on the status of all new projects and their editorial development and investment/acquisition status.
  • With the support of the sales teams & Commercial Executive collate and edit anecdotal and financial sales feedback to be presented to producers.
  • Preparing key sales points and presenting launch titles to the sales team at the pre-Showcase/Mipcom sales conferences.


The Ideal Candidate

Knowledge & Skills
  • The ability to read and creatively assess scripts and to feedback comments to producers in an effective way.
  • Proven experience in negotiating deals across all media in an acquisitions or sales environment, responsible for working on deals with the Head of Content, Drama.
  • Proven track record of working with producers in the commercial sector and a good understanding of challenges facing producers in the current financial environment.
  • A knowledge of the international co-production market as well as opportunities for raising pre- production finance.
  • A detailed knowledge of talent agreements, clearance processes, music rights and a sound knowledge of production finance.
