About the Role
The Telegraph is looking for a talented and enthusiastic individual to edit long-term content across the newsroom, ensuring that we keep our most successful evergreens up-to-date and replenish copy and visuals throughout old stories.
The Digital Content Editor will report to the Head of Long-term Content & SEO Planning and must have SEO and subscription and STARS goals at the forefront of their work. This role includes working with desks across the newsroom on a wide range of content, from cars and gardening to politics and money.
Key Responsibilities
  • Edit long-term content to a high-quality standard that is well optimised for search traffic
  • Edit content with the aim of reaching new readers and contributing to the company subscription goals
  • Have a meticulous eye for detail to ensure spelling and grammar is correct
  • Understand The Telegraph’s tone of voice and target audience to edit content to best engage readers
  • Sense check, fact check and identify gaps in coverage where updates are required to improve a story's value for readers
  • Carry out research to check the content and learn about topics being worked on to offer readers the most useful information
  • Build and edit online articles in CMS across all desks on a range of topics -
  • Prioritise content updates to suit search trends, the news agenda and changing seasons
  • Work with editors on social, homepage, showcase and newsletters for cross-promotion of content when it’s most relevant
  • Be proactive and reactive to support to the wider SEO team when urgent content updates are requested to support breaking news coverage and the fast-paced news agenda
Essential Skills required for the role
  • Excellent editing skills and ability to fact-check, sense-check, improve information in copy and refresh visuals like imagery/video/embeds
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team, in a fast-moving environment
  • Ability to manage workload and prioritise tasks, while maintaining accuracy and taking on occasional breaking news requests
  • Good understanding of SEO to optimise content and extend reach, while maintaining engaging and on-brand headlines
  • Good understanding of basic SEO tools like Google Trends and Adwords to help with decision-making for the best keywords to target in content edits
  • Confident in editing copywriting for SEO value, tone of voice, grammar and spelling
  • Strong communication skills and desire to build strong working relationships across thenewsroom to help understand how desks work, and their copywriting guidelines and help get editsapproved quicker
  • Experience working in a newsroom under pressure
Desirable skills for the role
  • A strong understanding of SEO to optimise key areas of an article to increase search traffic i.e.keyword-rich headlines, URLs, alt-text, intros, stand-firsts, subheadings, backlinking, tags andvisuals
  • Data savvy with an interest in using analytical tools (i.e. adobe, chartbeat) or work with datateams to examine what works and what doesn’t with edits to improve tasks performance
  • Highly organised & efficient
  • Experience using trello to work through tasks and deadlines
  • Previous copywriting or editing experience in a newsroom or high-quality publication
  • Good knowledge of how to harness other platforms (like social, showcase, homepage andnewsletters) to drive engagement through cross-promotion
