What is great about working at the BBC? Well...
Whatever you do, it has a massive impact. BBC News is read or watched every day by 80% of the British Public. So deploying any data product, means deploying to an massive scale.
And you will be deploying.
This team is all about applied science. We launched first personalised recommender system to BBC Mundo (our Spanish language World Service site) page within 7 months of data scientist number 1 joining. Since then we've deployed recommenders in 7 languages, while moving from simple content-based methods to sequential recommenders using deep learning.
But we're still just getting started. We're looking to unlock the potential of all the BBC's content through better, more consistent data modelling and inference across the whole production process
You will be working with new technologies in terms of digital product, experimentation, machine learning and data infrastructure. We need to stay relevant to all audiences and compete with newer web-first platforms. That is the core of the challenge.
You will be encouraging innovation. I will let hackathons , collaboration with academia and Newslabs speak for themselves.
You will be working for good. We are facilitating and leading the discussion about public service algorithms, actively designing our machines with bespoke cost functions that cares about BBC values.
You will be working in a flexible and diverse environment. We respect people, celebrate our diversity and do our best. Hours and place are not the key to our success, it is you and your wellbeing.
And occasionally you might be asked by an embarrassingly popular journalist do a quick voice over or an interview to practice your inner performer!
We're happy to discuss flexible and part time working.
Please indicate your choice under the flexible working question in the application . There is no obligation to raise this at the application stage but if you wish to do so, you are welcome to.
Flexible working will be part of the discussion at offer stage.
Benefits - We offer a competitive salary package, a flexible or part time 20-35 hour working week for work-life balance and 26 days holiday with the option to buy an extra 5 days, a defined pension scheme and discounted dental, health care, gym and much more.
Excellent career progression - the BBC offers great opportunities for employees to seek new challenges and work in different areas of the organisation.
Unrivalled training and development opportunities - our in-house Academy hosts a wide range of internal and external courses and certification.
