The BBC aims to stimulate and delight audiences across the UK with distinctive, creative content. To support this aim, BBC is entering a new charter period of significant and exciting change, developing new capabilities in order to define a BBC fit for the next generation.
OUR MISSION: To inform, educate and entertain all audiences, to deliver our public purposes
OUR AIM: To reinvent the BBC for a new generation
We'll do this through... OUR AMBITIONS: Making sure everyone gets value from the BBC, world-class creativity, global reach, financial stability and making the BBC an even greater place to work.
WHO's it with:
The BBC's Content Production Workflows division is transforming the production process across the BBC by connecting data across the entire production process from commissioning to publication. We need help of smart individuals to come and join us in the newly created data solutions and systems team. It is a joint venture between software engineers, data engineers, data scientists, content creators, product folks and maybe you?
Role Responsibility WHAT you'll be doing:
The role is hands-on work, taking guidance and inspiration from the lead data scientist and the head of data science. It is a part of a wider data science community within a BBC and we expect the data scientist to contribute and play an active role in democratizing data across the organization. Successful candidates should have a wide exposure to different machine learning algorithms and should be experts in data science best practice (making sure we deploy the simplest possible algorithms first and that there is proper evaluation in place).
Are you the right candidate? WHAT you'll need
We are looking for the following skill sets (ordered by importance):
1) Technical skills and analytical thinking:
· Strong understanding of Data Science, Analysis and ML techniques including recent advances and their applications for implementation in a production environment
· Proficiency in the use of statistical packages
· Understanding of how to evaluate algorithms and of model lifecycle management
· Good general programming skills
· Knowledge of code management and deployment
2) Teamwork and stakeholder management:
· Proven track record of delivering value in a production system
· Ability to adapt message to the audience
· Ability to clearly communicate
· Ability to listen to others' ideas and build on them
WHY you'll want it:
What is great about working at the BBC? Well...
Whatever you do, it has a massive impact. BBC News is read or watched every day by 80% of the British Public. So deploying any data product, means deploying to an massive scale.
And you will be deploying.
This team is all about applied science. We launched first personalised recommender system to BBC Mundo (our Spanish language World Service site) page within 7 months of data scientist number 1 joining. Since then we've deployed recommenders in 7 languages, while moving from simple content-based methods to sequential recommenders using deep learning.
But we're still just getting started. We're looking to unlock the potential of all the BBC's content through better, more consistent data modelling and inference across the whole production process
You will be working with new technologies in terms of digital product, experimentation, machine learning and data infrastructure. We need to stay relevant to all audiences and compete with newer web-first platforms. That is the core of the challenge.
You will be encouraging innovation. I will let hackathons , collaboration with academia and Newslabs speak for themselves.
You will be working for good. We are facilitating and leading the discussion about public service algorithms, actively designing our machines with bespoke cost functions that cares about BBC values.
You will be working in a flexible and diverse environment. We respect people, celebrate our diversity and do our best. Hours and place are not the key to our success, it is you and your wellbeing.
And occasionally you might be asked by an embarrassingly popular journalist do a quick voice over or an interview to practice your inner performer!
Package Description We're happy to discuss flexible and part time working.
Please indicate your choice under the flexible working question in the application . There is no obligation to raise this at the application stage but if you wish to do so, you are welcome to.
Flexible working will be part of the discussion at offer stage.
