The Design Lead will work collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation, supported by a small in-house design team, freelancers and external creative partners to concept, design, and commission compelling work across the Frieze brand.
This role will report to the Head of Marketing and Membership
Work alongside the Marketing and Fair teams to develop impactful visual concepts for fair marketing campaigns, following the Frieze brand guidelines, and manage the production of all campaign assets and onsite branding/signage with external creative partners and the in-house design team.
Oversee the design of all publishing products (frieze, Frieze Week and Frieze Masters Magazine) supported by a freelance Art Director and designers, by approving spreads layouts, covers, and by commissioning visuals including photography, illustration and special artists’ projects.
Support the editorial team providing strategic vision to translate and promote the content from print product into engaging visual assets for all Frieze channels
Support the Digital and frieze.com editorial teams on art direction for the website and other digital products.
Manage the in-house design team (currently made of a Senior Graphic Designer and a Junior Graphic Designer), alongside a network of external freelancers and creative partners.
Maintain brand consistency and the highest standards for every project, no matter how large or small.
Contribute to the creation and maintenance of all brand, logo and style guidelines.
Mentor, guide, and inspire junior creatives.

The Design Lead will work collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation, supported by a small in-house design team, freelancers and external creative partners to concept, design, and commission compelling work across the Frieze brand – including marketing campaigns for Frieze events, 8 issues of frieze magazine per year, Frieze Week and Frieze Masters Magazine and social media.
Candidates must provide a portfolio of innovative and inspiring work for individual executions and campaigns across a variety of channels: digital, publishing, social, print advertising and video.
The successful candidate should be versed in graphic design, have experience in art directing image-led stories and have an existing relationship with creative agencies, photographers and illustrators. This role requires a team player with exceptional communication skills, who is able to translate ideas and key messages into impactful images. You should have great attention to detail and possess a problem-solving mindset, making things happen for projects and budgets at any size.
Experience of art direction and design.
Relevant experience across art, luxury goods, publishing, advertising and fashion.
Demonstrable extensive knowledge of design, illustration, typography, layout, photography and motion.
Expert knowledge of Adobe’s Creative Suite.
Ability to work on multiple projects and deliver under tight deadlines with small budgets.
A passion and genuine interest in digital media, social media, content & technology.
Immersed in art and contemporary culture and trends, emerging technologies and platforms, with a demonstrable record of identifying and involving high quality creative partners to deliver impactful campaigns.
Mac proficiency with strong Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, After Effects skills.
Must be self-motivated, creative, strategic, organised and a team player.
Excellent stakeholder management and presentation skills.
Be a champion for engaging campaign ideas and great design.
Range in style, aesthetic and have a visual POV.
Working knowledge of Premiere, Cinema 4d, Sketch, HTML/CSS, Illustration are all a plus.
This is a permanent position.
Please note, remote working set up until lockdown restrictions have been lifted. Thereafter, the role would be based at Surrey Street
Working hours are 10:00 – 18:00, Monday to Friday
Occasional travel and weekend work may be required
Overseas travel might be required to work at Frieze international fairs
