Job Introduction

Unrivalled production, Unmissable programmes.
BBC Studios is a powerhouse of bold British creative content. The BBC’s main TV production arm, we lead the way in creative storytelling, and we’re known and celebrated around the world for the quality of our programmes.
A unique combination of our BBC editorial values, cutting-edge craft, and access to diverse creative talent from around the country, helps us produce the boldest of ideas. In April 2017 we launched as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the BBC, working with customers around the world and generating financial returns for license fee payers.
With over 350 hours on in-house output a year, BBC Studios, Scripted (Drama) makes some of the most original, diverse and highly acclaimed television.  These include continuing drama series such as Casualty and EastEnders and series and serials such as Silent Witness, Our Girl and Three Girls.
We are looking for a Head of Development with excellent writer and agent relationships who will be responsible for originating ideas to drive the development and creative vision for the hub forwards.
The role is responsible for developing projects independently, which fit the overall Drama strategy, with the aim of securing commissions for the hub.

Role Responsibility

As Head of Development, you will work closely with Head of Drama and Hub Script Editor to develop and secure commissions for the Drama North hub.  Combining the knowledge of channel needs and editorial guidelines with a high level of awareness of the UK and international television market, you will be required to communicate the development strategy for BBC Drama Commissions to agents, writers, producer and Directors.  Furthermore, the post holder will be expected to identify and nurture new and existing writing talent, ensuring the BBC is courting the best voices at all levels of expertise.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience of film and television output and development and an awareness of any potential gaps. You will have experience of script reading and writing script reports with the ability to demonstrate sound editorial judgement and sensitivity, both verbally and on paper.  A detailed knowledge of the current status of slate would be required so as to be able to answer queries, assess needs and spot opportunities.  A familiarity with the protocol and organisation of film festivals and markets is also desirable.

About the Company

We don’t focus simply on what we do – we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us. Please make sure you’ve read about our values and behaviours in the document attached below. You’ll be asked questions relating to them as part of your application for this role.
The BBC is committed to building a culturally diverse workforce and therefore strongly encourages applications from underrepresented groups.  We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of their background
