Our Media Panning team is responsible for building thoughtful and innovative media plans that combine channels within Search, Social, Display and Video to effectively connect our clients’ messages with their potential customers. They apply their knowledge of the holistic media landscape and how consumers interact with it to create then steward integrated media plans throughout their lifecycle. They are our clients’ key contacts for a unified view of their media activity, narrating the story of the campaign from planning recommendation through to post-campaign analysis (PCA). They own the creation of integrated plans, oversee cross-channel reporting, recommend in-flight cross-channel optimisations and lead the development of the PCA.
To ensure market-leading expertise, our media planners must nurture strong platform and publisher partner relationships, adopting a cycle of continuous learning to keep pace with the ever-shifting landscape. Similarly, they must develop and maintain mastery of the wealth of tools and data sources that Essence makes available to them. They are skilled at interrogating data, drawing insight from it and using tools to inform their planning decisions. They are deft storytellers, weaving compelling narratives to validate their recommendations.
The Head of Media Planning is responsible for leading this team, their development and their output in EMEA. With oversight of four individual teams, each focused on delivery for a different client group, a large part of the role lies in ensuring consistently high standards of media planning across the agency, whilst catering to the nuances of each clients’ scope of work and business needs.
In addition to their responsibility to our existing clients, the Head of Media Planning plays a key role in supporting the agency’s growth efforts via new business, and representing Essence via participation in agency events and the development of thought leadership.
The successful delivery of this role requires working in close partnership with other Essence teams - including strategy, activation, data strategy and analytics - along with our partners within GroupM.
The role requires extensive media agency experience in client-facing roles and a background in media planning. It demands proven skill and a passion for managing and developing large teams.
You will report to the EVP, Head of Media EMEA and be an active participant in the Essence EMEA leadership team who, together, collaborate on achieving our mission to make brands more valuable to the world.
Some of the things we’d like you to do:
Lead a multi-faceted organisation of 70+ media planners, motivating and inspiring them to ensure a high level of talent retention
Line-manage up to nine senior media planners who each lead the delivery for their individual client or brand assignments
Support our talent recruitment and resource management teams to ensure the right experience and skill set is in place to support each scope of work
Champion our Signals Planning approach, ensuring it is brought to life and applied in the most relevant way for each client team’s needs
Identify skills gaps and devise, develop and deliver training as necessary
Collaborate with our our product team to develop our proprietary media planning tools and with client teams to roll out and apply them as appropriate
Collaborate with colleagues in GroupM and Essence global on investment decisions for external tools and data sets
Be a champion of media owner and platform partner relationships for the team, ensuring these are nurtured and respected
Work hand in hand with the Head of Media Activation to ensure seamless ways of working between your teams
Keep abreast of industry research and planning theory and cascade this knowledge to the team, helping them understand how and when to apply it
Understand new media execution capabilities and drive innovation through the team’s work, as appropriate for each clients’ business needs
Provide regular, ongoing engagement with senior clients, as required
Support with hands-on planning work during busy periods such as annual planning cycles, new client onboarding etc.
Participate in thought-leadership opportunities to establish Essence as a planning leader within the industry
Collaborate with your peers on the EMEA leadership team to drive cross-agency initiatives
Some of the experience, expertise and skills we’re looking for:
Demonstrated progression in a role managing a staff of 35+
Proven experience at head of team/department/channel level
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
Adept problem-solver and with a natural ability to prioritize tasks
Ability to lead and manage initiatives, while driving collaboration across internal cross-functional teams, with multiple external partners
Extensive storytelling and presentation skills
