We’re now looking for a Head of Visual and Data Journalism. In this new and overarching role, you’ll be responsible for an award winning team of data journalists, graphics artists, developers and visual project editors.
You’ll require a strategic view to lead the creation of impactful visual journalism that explains the world to our readers, working at a fast pace as part of our 24 hour global news room. Think of the climate crisis, the tumultuous events at Westminster, the Windrush scandal, the Uber files: you'll play a key role in bringing stories like this to life. You’ll also help to shape a new era of Guardian visual investigations.
About The Role
Devise and deliver a strategy to take our data and visual journalism to the next level, with measurable results
Lead your team to produce world class, meaningful data and visual journalism, prioritising stories in line with the Guardian’s editorial strategy
Be an ambassador for data and visuals in the newsroom, communicating regularly with peers and senior stakeholders across departments, representing your team at meetings, contributing ideas, building relationships and ensuring smooth collaborations
Set a clear direction for your team, inspiring them to push the boundaries of visual and data journalism with innovative results
Uphold and improve upon best practices within your team on areas including data visualisation, news graphics, interactive storytelling, and data-led stories, communicating these to the wider newsroom to aid understanding of the team’s core principles
About You
Substantial experience producing significant pieces of visual and data journalism
Specialist knowledge of fields such as graphics, cartography, data visualisation, data analysis, data sourcing techniques and interactive development
Deep familiarity with the tools commonly used in data and visual journalism, and the theory behind data visualisation and data journalism
Substantial experience working in a busy news environment across multiple platforms
Proven track record of building and managing high-performing teams
Track record of driving innovation
An experienced editor with a track record of focusing resources on the right stories at the right time for the biggest impact
Ideally, you’ll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role
