Marks and Spencer are a unique British heritage brand with a history of ‘firsts’ and there has been quite a revolution happening inside our International online teams. As we look to introduce M&S to a global audience, we are seeking out additional channels to complement our 35+ International direct to consumer websites. The fastest growing and most dynamic of these are online marketplaces. With several large accounts secured and more in the pipeline, we are orientating towards this operating model to drive growth over the coming years.
Our International online business is being invested in heavily and the results are starting to show as we outgrow competitors. We have a new team in place who share some impressive International experience and have created a clear strategy which will deliver ambitious goals. After a period of sustained growth, this is an exciting new role sitting within the International department. Reporting into the Head of Digital Channel Development and working across functions, they will deliver marketing objectives against our International marketplace strategy.
The successful candidate should have hands-on experience working with large online marketplaces, either on the brand or platform side. The individual will be expert in creating brand experiences via 3rd parties, as well as driving performance from marketing activities. They will be able to work under their own initiative to position M&S front of mind for both our strategic marketplace partners and their customers alike.
Build brand presence: with both existing and future partners you will ensure M&S is represented on their sites in line with our values, product credentials and overall International brand strategy. This will include creation and maintenance of brand pages and supporting assets
Drive performance: via paid and unpaid marketplace campaigns including onsite PPC, sites placements, bespoke brand events, social as well as aligning to significant marketplace trading moments. You will be obsessive about campaign metrics, return on ad spend and onsite product discoverability. You will define KPIs and track performance against them
Develop our marketing playbook: we are excited this is a new area for us, there will be plenty of opportunity to test and learn, reinforce and scale success, whilst learning from less successful activity. Both at the tactical campaign level and longer-term acquisition and retention strategies. You will own the analysis and commentary of weekly trade and monthly performance reporting of the marketplace marketing channel
Manage budgets: for all marketplace activity ensuring spend is accurately forecast and deployed in our month/quarter/year cycles
Build winning partnerships: You will lead interactions between M&S and marketplace brand, marketing & advertising teams, to identify new opportunities and troubleshoot pain points across functions. Maximising value from every interaction with our partners will be key, enabling you to develop win-win marketing activity on an enduring basis.
Champion the channel: Draw actionable insights from our data, competitors, and the industry landscape and share these across the International business, our partner network and wider within M&S. You will be excited by M&S’ digital transformation and be driven to contribute to it.
You are genuinely passionate about marketplace platforms and the opportunities they provide brands. You are detail orientated with an eye for the best ways to digitally represent brands. You are curious, with a desire to constantly learn and improve yourself, and a proactive mindset.
Your skills and experience will include:
Demonstrable hands-on experience of leading marketplace marketing activity (with international or Zalando experience a plus)
Being expert in data driven decision making, often in an ambiguous context
Being a confident communicator who can convey ideas and points of view in a compelling and engaging manner
Experience working with analytics platforms (i.e. Adobe or GA360) and working knowledge of navigating marketplace vendor management platforms (e.g. Zalando Retail Centre, Vendor Central)
Able to work calmly under pressure, and accustomed to delivering time-sensitive activity on balance with our longer term, strategic deliverables
Able to work autonomously in their area, whilst able to build great working relationships with many stakeholders.
