Role purpose and overview
The Night Picture Editor is responsible for overseeing the smooth running of the picture desk between 4pm and midnight which includes picture tasting, picture research, taking responsibility for picture changes in print editions, checking accuracy of picture captions and credits on print page proofs and monitoring first editions of the daily newspapers. The Night Picture Editor reports directly to the Picture Editor and will work closely with the late Online Picture Editor.

Key responsibilities
  • Monitoring the incoming picture feed from image providers to ensure TMG is maximising its publication opportunities
  • Constantly liaising with key editorial departments to ensure all picture research requests are completed accurately and in a timely manner
  • Helping to select images for publication in stories using our CHP photographic database and AEM publishing software
  • Captioning published images concisely and correctly, ensuring factual information, spellings and punctuation are correct
  • Providing a nightly email to the picture desk team identifying the best photographs and providing information on which images key competitors are publishing
  • Commissioning photographers to cover breaking news stories
  • Attending the late news conference with the Picture Editor
Key skills
  • Experience of photo editing for a news publication, either digital or print
  • Strong interest in and demonstrable knowledge of current affairs, sport and entertainment
  • Sound industry knowledge including regional, national and international contacts
  • CHP experience preferable
  • Able to work quickly, accurately, to tight deadlines and under pressure
