What will Programme Lead: Design do?
The Programme Lead: Design, will manage the quality and creative content of our Growth and Innovation programmes – ensuring our they reflect the best in contemporary practice and thinking. They will also be responsible for business development with key strategic partners which reflect our new strategy for 2020 especially in areas such as Health and Wellbeing, Sustainable Living and Design Skills, as well as playing a pivotal role in forming responses to bids and tenders.
The role will be responsible for managing the development of programmes in existing and new markets and, driving new income streams while working to deliver great client experiences and boosting the Design Council team’s knowledge of strategic and systemic design for social impact.
The postholder will work to amplify Design Council’s new strategy, to achieve agreed business and income objectives while developing a coherent framework of design methods to unlock new ideas and deliver opportunities for innovation. The role will work closely with our growing cohort of Design Associates to reflect the diversity of practice they bring to our work. It will require working in partnership with the Head of Programmes, Head of Architecture & Built Environment and the Chief Design Officer, to ensure effective, needs-driven programme development and implementation, exceeding requirements of funding partners and meeting income targets.
The kind of work you might do in the role:
  • Building great relationships with new and existing clients and designing innovative programmes for them with multidisciplinary teams
  • Understanding client needs and translating them into dynamic led programmes
  • Playing a pivotal role in bids, tenders, presentation and pitches for new business
  • Delivering excellent client and participant experiences
  • Developing tools and methodologies around service design, human-centred design and design tech (and pushing practice towards humanity-centred and systemic design)
  • Being an exponent and ambassador for Design Council  - facilitating workshops and getting to know wide range of clients, you will be spending time with everyone from users speaking to the chief executive of a charity
  • Telling the story of our impact and ensuring that its told widely and accessibly
Design Development
  • Work in partnership across teams to design, develop and document creative content, drawing upon the Framework for Innovation. Creating visual narratives that tell the story of our work and inspire others
  • Use your knowledge and experience to review existing and develop new tools and methodologies working with the Design Council Team and our partners to gain their input and support and insight
  • Work with Policy and Research team to ensure programmes have a robust theory of change model in place to support effective insight and evidence capture
  • Be able to deliver prototypes of services and products that can be tested with users
  • Deliver and facilitate workshops alongside our Design Associates and in-house team
  • Scanning the market for new ideas, resources, and inspiration and sharing them widely
  • Work with and manage our Design Associates and in-house team to develop and deliver new, boundary-pushing programmes and workshops
  • Programme Manage the recruitment of new Design Associates, ensuring their skills and experience match the needs of our target markets and sectors.
  • Manage contractual and financial relationships with suppliers and third-party organisations (including Design Associates)
  • Support the development and definition of the operating model of our programmes, specifying resourcing requirements for ongoing management and delivery and ensuring learning is captured during and after programmes.
  • Actively manage programme progress and effectiveness against agreed milestones, resolving issues and making changes as they arise
Business Development
  • Manage the identification and exploration of potential funding options, markets, partners and/or clients for existing or new programmes in partnership with Head of Programmes and Programme Lead: Social Innovation
  • Manage relationships with potential clients, partners and/or funders working collaboratively with them to develop a partnership approach to the development of programme
  • Engage, manage and communicate and consult with key internal and external stakeholders that are critical to the success of the programme (i.e. partners, stakeholders, Design Associates) developing their understanding and expectations and in relation to programme delivery
  • Identify key strategic partnerships
  • Identify and develop a client and business pipeline for Social Innovation, while ensuring that existing clients have outstanding experiences
  • Contribute to achieving the annual income targets for Growth & Innovation Programmes by leading the creative input to bids, tenders, presentations and proposals
  • Support in ensuring income pipeline is kept up to date
  • Lead the preparation and delivery of bids, tenders and proposals, attending pitches
  • Scanning the market for new ideas, resources, and inspiration and sharing them widely
  • Delivering workshops and activities for senior level stakeholders representing Design Council and our track record in delivering design support programmes.
  • Presenting to potential clients, partners and key stakeholders about our work
Programme Management and Delivery
Lead on the management of all aspects of the innovation programme to ensure delivery is on time, within budget and that strategic goals are achieved:
  • Oversee the promotion of programmes to external stakeholders, ensuring strong marketing and communications plans and collateral are in place to support delivery and impact.
  • Financial and budget management and accountability ensuring income and costs align with agreed programme KPIs
  • Ensure the development of robust operating models, including management of resource requirements for delivery
  • Proactively monitor progress against milestones, resolving issues and initiating appropriate corrective action and maintaining programme documentation.
  • Work with the Corporate Services team to support monitoring and reporting against programme budgets and ensure contractual documents with clients and partners are in place
  • Lead on monitoring and evaluation to ensure that new insight is captured and used to drive thought leadership and programme delivery
  • Responsible for programme governance and operational processes in conjunction with Operations Manger
  • Manage the contractual relationships with suppliers and third-party organisations and groups
  • Produce robust and professional management reports on all aspects of programme development and delivery for all internal and external stakeholders
  • Work with our partners to oversee the recruitment of participants onto programmes
  • Work with the Chief Design Officer and Head of Growth and Innovation as necessary to provide insight and support to foster cross-organisational learning and business development.
  • Facilitate workshops and undertake public speaking engagements where required
Management Responsibilities
  • Day-to-day line management of Project Assistant: including performance management, setting objectives, performance appraisal, training and development. Ensure goals and objectives are cascaded through the management line.
Corporate Responsibilities
  • Ensure you comply with Design Council operational policies and procedures including financial and risk management, data management, Quality Assurance, project management and evaluation processes, brand guidelines, internal health and safety policy and safeguarding policy.
Does this sound like you?
  • A degree qualification (or similar) and demonstrable experience in design /design management
  • Significant experience successfully leading, developing and managing complex multiple programmes which generate income
  • Significant experience in applying design approaches strategically to deliver design innovation and impact
  • Proven business development skills with a track record of bringing in and developing new business
  • Strong client relationship management skills working with demonstrable experience of working. with multiple and complex external partners within programmes.
  • Proven management skills
  • Experience in working and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, including groups that may not have previous experience of strategic design
  • Excellent experience of budget management, forecasting and risk management
  • Excellent interpersonal and written, visual and verbal communication skills the ability to communicate innovation to a wide range of audiences
  • Proven experience and ability to use Agile project management methodologies and tools, as well as reporting and presentation tools (ie Microsoft Office, Powerpoint, Excel, Outlook)
  • Proficient user of reporting and presentation tools (ie Microsoft Office, Powerpoint, Excel, Outlook - PLUS digital collaboration platforms like MicrosoftTeams
  • A passion and interest in the strategic role of design in tackling complex social challenges
  • Understanding of the social design landscape, including the third sector, and how ‘the system’ works in practice
  • An existing network on contacts in the public and third sectors
  • Experience of public speaking and presenting
