What the Innovation Programme Lead: Social Innovation will do?
Programme Lead: Social Innovation is responsible for the delivery of our existing innovation offers, in health and wellbeing (including Design in the Public Sector run in partnership with the LGA) as well as developing major new partnerships and programmes for a range of public, third and private sector clients in line with our new strategy for 2020. In addition, this role will lead on the development and effective marketing of our core 1 and 2 day workshop offer in conjunction with the Programme Lead: Design.
The postholder will work to amplify Design Council’s new strategy, to achieve agreed business and income objectives. The role will be responsible for the effective leadership, management and implementation of new business development and programme delivery, ensuring a consistent, high-quality experience for our partners and improved outcomes for participating teams and wider stakeholders. The role will report to the Head of Programmes, and will work in partnership with the Programme Lead: Design and will be responsible for line managing a Programme Manager, Project Manager and Project Assistant.

Building trust and relationships for the long-term with our clients and partners - growing a family of best practice and a supported network of clients
Using your network to find out where design isn’t being used and could make an impact - and deploying design where its needed most
Understanding client needs and translating them into dynamic design-led programmes
Playing a pivotal role in bids, tenders, presentation and pitches for new business
Building skills, capability and confidence in the organisations we work with, ensuring we are creating the conditions for innovation so that design is sustainable in our work
Being an exponent and ambassador for Design Council - facilitating workshops and getting to know wide range of clients, you will be spending time with everyone from users speaking to the chief executive of a charity
Telling the story of our impact and ensuring that its told widely and accessibly
Business and Programme Development
Manage the identification and exploration of potential funding options, markets, partners and/or clients for existing or new programmes in partnership with Head of Programmes and Programme Lead: Design
Manage relationships with potential clients, partners and/or funders working collaboratively with them to develop a partnership approach to the development of programme
Develop new programmes that use design to deliver social impact for a range of clients which meet the objectives of the Design Council’s strategy
Identify key strategic partnerships
Identify and develop a client and business pipeline for Social Innovation, while ensuring that existing clients have outstanding experiences
Developing and expanding our 1 and 2 day workshop offer
Work with the Head of Programmes to develop a new stream of online programming
Lead the preparation and delivery of bids, tenders and proposals, attending pitches
Scanning the market for new ideas, resources, and inspiration and sharing them widely
Support the development and definition of the operating model of our programmes, specifying resourcing requirements for ongoing management and delivery and ensuring learning is captured during and after programmes.
Produce robust and professional management reports on all aspects of programme development and delivery for all internal and external stakeholders
Manage contractual and financial relationships with suppliers and third-party organisations
Provide coaching and advice on programme with other members of the team
Programme management and delivery
Lead on the management of all aspects of the innovation programme to ensure delivery is on time, within budget and that strategic goals are achieved:
Oversee the promotion of programmes to external stakeholders, ensuring strong marketing and communications plans and collateral are in place to support delivery and impact.
Financial and budget management and accountability ensuring income and costs align with agreed programme KPIs
Ensure the development of robust operating models, including management of resource requirements for delivery
Proactively monitor progress against milestones, resolving issues and initiating appropriate corrective action and maintaining programme documentation.
Work with the Corporate Services team to support monitoring and reporting against programme budgets and ensure contractual documents with clients and partners are in place
Lead on monitoring and evaluation to ensure that new insight is captured and used to drive thought leadership and programme delivery
Responsible for programme governance and operational processes in conjunction with Operations Manger
Manage the contractual relationships with suppliers and third-party organisations and groups
Work with our partners to oversee the recruitment of participants onto programmes
Work with the Chief Design Officer and Head of Growth and Innovation as necessary to provide insight and support to foster cross-organisational learning and business development.
Facilitate workshops and undertake public speaking engagements where required
Day-to-day line management of Programme Manager, and Project Manager and Project Assistant, including performance management, setting objectives, performance appraisal, training and development. Ensure goals and objectives are cascaded through the management line.
Ensure you comply with Design Council operational policies and procedures including financial and risk management, data management, Quality Assurance, project management and evaluation processes, brand guidelines, internal health and safety policy and safeguarding policy.
Does this sound like you?
A degree qualification (or similar) in service design and/or design management
Significant experience of leading, developing and managing complex social innovation programmes which generate income
Significant experience in applying design approaches strategically to deliver innovation and impact
Proven business development skills with a track record of bringing in and developing new business
Strong client relationship management skills working with demonstrable experience of working. with multiple and complex external partners within programmes.
Experience in working and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, including groups that may not have previous experience of strategic design
Excellent experience of budget management, forecasting and risk management
Excellent client relationship management skills with proven experience of working with multiple and complex external partners within programmes to deliver results.
Proven experience of team management with a focus on delivery
Ability to plan, prioritise and multi task to proactively deliver to tight timescales through excellent time management, organisational skills and strong attention to detail
Excellent interpersonal and written, visual and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate innovation to a wide range of audiences
Proven experience of Agile as well as applying programme management methodologies and tools in an innovation and design environment
Proficient user of reporting and presentation tools (ie Microsoft Office, Powerpoint, Excel, Outlook - PLUS digital collaboration platforms like MicrosoftTeams
Understanding of the public health and social innovation landscape, including the third sector, and how ‘the system’ works in practice
A passion and interest in the strategic role of design in tackling complex social and economic challenges
Agile with the ability to flex and spot problems before they happen
