The A Side: A Day in The Life

Universal Music Group is looking for a Senior Data Scientist to join our Commercial Technologies team, working across prediction, segmentation, optimization, machine learning, adtech and other areas where data and statistical methods can be applied to measurable advantage. Working on interesting high value problems from teams across the business, including frontline labels, A&R, catalogue, commercial, advertising, marketing, operations and our global OPCOs.
The ideal candidate should have a strong statistical background, with a very good understanding of common machine learning techniques. While we encourage the team to use the right tools for the job, candidates should at least be proficient in R or Python & SQL at a minimum. This candidate should also have a demonstrated ability to manage client requests in a professional manner, communicate research and learnings to a variety of different audience types (from Senior Executives down to fellow Analysts), and work in both project teams and in silo to solve interesting problems in a consultative fashion.

The B Side: Skills & Experience

Be Data-driven

  • Combine data sources with insights to monetize our long-tail catalogue
  • Product Owner for any data driven platforms the Commercial Tech team have built
  • Create algorithms and prototypes that can be handed over for productionalisation once the value is proven
  • Research and develop data driven solutions to help solve current and future business problems
  • Preparing data sets for applications such as classification, modelling and clustering
  • Occasional analytics dashboard creation
  • Build/refine/improve new or pre-existing statistical models or processes

Be Commercial

  • Study user behaviour, demographics, content types, and a variety of different music streaming platforms to analyse ways to increase Universal Music’s market share
  • Advise on data related topics to help guide or inform business decisions

Be Collaborative

  • Work with the Commercial Technology team on their core platforms and discover ways of using data to maximise revenue opportunities
  • Work closely with our Data Science teams across the globe
  • Supporting other data related teams to design new KPI’s and models to enhance their tooling

Person Specification


  • Extensive experience of data mining tools and algorithms, machine learning and statistics (e.g. regression, decision trees, neural networks, collaborative filtering, clustering, survival analysis, graph theory or equivalent)
  • Expert analytic abilities using SQL, R and other tools (e.g. Tableau, MicroStrategy or equivalent)
  • Working knowledge of cloud-based data environments & tools (e.g. AWS, Big Query, Hadoop or equivalent)
  • Development skills in Python and Javascript or equivalent
  • Knowledge of how to use Jira and other project management tools or equivalent
  • Demonstrated ability to lead data projects from initial problem statement through to benefits realisation
  • Effective communicator at all levels with great presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with business partners and colleagues
  • Capable of tackling very loosely defined problems
  • Creative, outside the box thinking and problem-solving approach
  • High energy and enthusiasm
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong experience working in a Data Science related role
  • Experience of managing and engaging with clients in a consultative or analytical capacity
  • Experience working with development teams to productize work


  • Music technology experience beneficial
  • Knowledge of music repertoire very useful
