BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales (BBC NOW) is at the heart of the cultural landscape of Wales, occupying a distinctive and unique role as a broadcast Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra that, in addition to giving a wide range of public concerts, also plays the soundtracks of some of the BBC's best-loved shows, including Atlantis, Sherlock, Blue Planet, Doctor Who, and many more.
As a Symphony Orchestra, BBC NOW has a busy schedule of concerts throughout Wales and beyond with a repertoire which showcases a broad range of classical symphonic music. BBC NOW also has a major role championing Welsh music and contemporary composers, as well as collaborating with a wide range of other organisations throughout Wales and beyond.
The Orchestra is entering a new chapter of leadership, whereby a new Orchestra Director and Principal Conductor will be joining in 2020, offering opportunities for creativity and innovation for the team.
As Learning and Partnerships Senior Project Manager, you will be covering a period of 12 months maternity leave. During this period of change, you will be responsible for all learning activity connecting BBC NOW with audiences and partner organisations, particularly targeting those from diverse backgrounds.
During this time of creativity and opportunity, you will be expected to harness the changing landscape and opportunities of BBC NOW to deliver music education programmes and outreach to schools, communities and other partnerships, with an aim to make classical music accessible to all.
In this role, you will collaborate with the Director and the Head of Artistic planning to seek opportunities for the Orchestra and Chorus to work more widely with both existing partnerships or develop new fields. You will develop strong relationships with the musicians of BBC NOW, and take a leading role in developing learning projects with our partnerships.
You will make an impact by devising distinct and artistically excellent programme of activities and learning opportunities that engages a wide range of diverse audiences. You will also build and maintain effective and mutually beneficial relationships with our many collaborators and stakeholders within the BBC, and outside, including Arts Council of Wales, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and Welsh National Opera (amongst others). You will also prepare proposals and funding applications to secure income to ensure the activities developed are able to continue.
Are you the right candidate?
As the right candidate, you will have an in-depth understanding of the arts, and a strong commitment to education and engagement in the arts. You will be creative, and have a clear passion and commitment to enrich people's lives through the arts. This does not necessarily have to be in an orchestral environment; however a good understanding of music engagement and education will help you succeed in this role.
You will have worked in partnerships to deliver sustained education and engagement activities, and will have the ability to think strategically, and manage sometimes conflicting priorities and peaks in workload, to deliver large scale arts engagement projects. You will also be able to manage budgets and the financial detail of your projects.
You will also be able to work as part of the Orchestra senior management team, as well as line managing a team of learning specialists, who will look to your role for inspiration and direction.
An arts or entertainment background is important, as you will need to be able to get to know our audiences, although this does not necessarily have to be orchestral experience. However, a passion for the output BBC NOW creates, and the art behind it will be critical for the role.
