DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION The recently-created 4Studio is the engine room for C4’s digital acceleration strategy, with the mission to create, adapt and distribute brilliant content across the key social media channels. We work very closely with key people and departments within C4 to make this a success. 4Studio is based in C4’s new National HQ in Leeds and is a key component of C4’s regional strategy, creating creative job opportunities outside London and expanding the diversity of the company’s creative contribution. JOB PURPOSE Channel 4 is a world class entertainment brand. The Social team within 4Studio is responsible for further building our world class social media presence. We are looking for industry-leading Social Media Managers to help us achieve our objective; the team will be responsible for channel management of C4, All 4, E4 accounts and some sub-channels across all social platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat. The Social Media Manager will be responsible for advising on and executing branded content campaigns, and every element therein - responsible for building publishing calendars to syndicate a wide array of content across multiple platforms, approving and scripting social copy and owning tone of voice for the accounts, ensuring all content is optimised fully to reach the right audiences, and liaising with internal and external stakeholders to report on performance. They will work closely with 4Studio’s Content team and external production companies who’ll be making the content, as well as sales teams to plan commercial campaigns, and strategic and analytic roles within the Social team to assess trends, analyse engagement, help inform publishing strategies and ensure our Social Media presence is always ahead of the curve. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Content Publishing & Channel Management
  • You will be responsible for publishing and scheduling all content across all social media channels for your brands (including individual show channels). This will include channel management across multiple platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
  • You will need to be able to understand the different brand purposes, tones and behaviours of Channel 4 and its shows
  • Much but not all of this content will be based on our programmes. We should have an opinion on anything that interests our target audience
  • You’ll be interested in social media trends and adept at using content discovery and social media monitoring tools to assess the landscape in real time and ensure our accounts are timely and engaging
Create & Join Conversations
  • Whether it’s about our programmes or anything that interests our target, you will need to be able to create conversations and join ones that are already happening (e.g. on Reddit or Twitter)
  • Many of our programmes have groups of fans online. You will need to be able to harness the power of their enthusiasm, so they do some of our marketing for us
  • You will need to be able to exploit the opportunities that come from dual-screening to make some linear programmes into interactive events
Autonomy & Judgement
  • You must be able to judge how people will react to our social posts.
  • You will be given a large degree of autonomy, but you need to be able to judge when something needs escalating
  • You will need to be able to use data to feedback insights into key stakeholders, and then suggest and articulate re-prioritisation of content outputs accordingly
Lead Innovation
  • We want to be seen as a cutting-edge brand. You must be abreast of developments in the world of social media and what the opportunities might be for us.
  • At the same time as our day-to-day channel management needs to be stellar, you will be required to lead ground-breaking social media campaigns
Promote Diversity
  • Our target audience are diverse and Channel 4 exists to promote diversity. You will need to be empathetic towards a variety of audiences and be able to interact with them in ways that feel natural to them
  • You will need to be curious and a voracious consumer of culture, and ready and willing to feed back new social trends to the wider team
People Skills
  • You will be required to manage the sometimes-competing demands of key stakeholders. Cool under pressure and excellent powers of persuasion are required.
  • You will need to be able to explain both problems and solutions in layman’s terms. This will be important when “managing upwards”
  • As well as yourself, you may be responsible for managing a small but growing team of Assistant Social Media Managers and Apprentices, so some experience of people management is desired
  • You will need to have a good working relationship with Legal & Compliance. They are there to make sure we stay the right side of the line rather than to clip your wings. Channel 4 was Born Risky
Measurement & Reporting
  • You will be required to work with Analysts to produce regular updates that will be shared with senior management and the executive team
  • This requires the ability to use social media measurement tools and present the information in a clear, concise way
  • Whether something has gone well or badly, you will be required to learn lessons from what has been done and be able to apply those lessons, so we keep on improving

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
  • Demonstrate significant experience of using scheduling tools, creating social publishing calendars and engaging with communities
  • Demonstrate significant experience in optimisation of social content across a multitude of different platforms to reach bigger and/or focused audiences. You’ll know why thumbnails, titles, metadata and tagging are as important as what’s in the content itself.
  • Demonstrate experience using social measurement and reporting tools, and how you’ve learnt from them to inform future social community management.
  • Proven experience in publishing and scheduling content for an established brand, including channel management across multiple platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

CONDITIONS
  • You will need to be willing to work with the other Social Media Managers in a rota so Channel 4, E4 and All 4 are all active at key times. This will sometimes require working at evenings, weekends and bank holidays. You will get time off in lieu for doing so
  • While we embrace agile working, you will be primarily expected to work from the Leeds office if you are on duty between 0930 and 1800 from Monday to Friday. If you are on duty outside these hours you are welcome to work from the toilet or the moon as long as you get the job done
