About

Originally established in 1843 as the Sheffield School of Design, the Art & Design Department is today ‘home’ for approximately 1600 students and 70 staff. The Department embraces ‘Transformation’ as the overarching theme or orientation that runs through its curricula and wider activities; the ability for Art and Design to transform people’s lives through and by the application of creative and critical exploration. It is our ambition that through the outstanding quality of our teaching, research and practice, and their interaction with the wider creative community that we facilitate, our students become ‘transformers’. The impression the department has on the professional world continues to grow as the partnerships we establish with our students go way beyond course experiences, and into lifelong personal and professional relationships.
