The brief was to pick a book and redesign it in a way that it would enhance the story. To add something more to it in comparison to eBooks. Original: A Barbarian in China, Adriaan Van Dis, 1987 This is a travel report about the writers journey along the silk route. The title of the book, which became a best-seller in the Netherlands, recalls Henri Michaux’ “Un barbare en Asie”, an incisive and cutting look at 1930’s Asia through this Belgian’s eyes. Along the silk route, obviously, Van Dis runs into al lot of Chinese people. There is much miscommunication and confusion because of the enormous difference in culture. 11265: The total amount of kilometres the Silk Route covers. Main book concept: miscommunication, the thread enhances the miscommunication throughout the book. Page numbers: To enhance the miscommunication throughout the book, I only made use of the numbers 11265. For example, page 7 is numbered as 61 ( 6+1 ), but page 61 is also numbered as 61. Page 109 is numbered as 121161622655551225555655522161111 The book was featured in Museum Meermanno, The Hague, aug/oct 2011.
