2| SAMPLES OF CREATIVE WORK

  • Sulaiman R. Khan [he/him/his/Disabled]
The following executions are a sampling of creative work and experimental creative work. My 2012 undergraduate dissertation excerpt is an example of my writing skills. Margin and We Are All Gods Now are experimental projects centred around my identity and how I relate to the world.

creative work: DISSERTATION EXCERPT–BA

experimental creative work: MARGIN

We are defined by our bodies, whether we like it or not (although each of us is much more than the sum of our body). My disability affects how I relate to the world around me, but I find that pre-existing ideas of disability have also coloured others’ views of me. This is largely related to representation of disability, which is why I took to the streets to make a valid, if tongue-in-cheek point.
PLACARD COPY
“I am about as realistic a representation of a woman as the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 is of a disabled person.”
AIM
To create an ambient ad to shock people into greater disability awareness in London
PRIMARY TARGET MARKET
General public, London
SECONDARY TARGET MARKET
Mass media
CONCEPT & RATIONALE
Attract a visceral reaction and turn it into an opportunity to get people thinking about the nature of marginalisation, gender and disability.
FINAL OUTCOME
Had some thoughtful conversations with strangers, raised awareness, made some industry connections.
Won several campaigning awards for my project including named as a Finalist for the SMK London Social Justice Award, Sheila McKechnie Foundation (SMK) and National winner for THE SHOUT AWARD for Campaigning, vinspired.

experimental creative work: WE ARE ALL GODS NOW

As a technophile (out of necessity, and not just preference), I am fascinated by the increasingly hazy lines between technology and humanity.
After watching a keynote speech called “We are the Gods Now” by Jason Silva I was inspired to get together with some friends to construct this creature out of technological paraphernalia like CDs, batteries, Ethernet cables, etc. My role was that of producer and co-director.
As our technological abilities as humans expand, we are creating as Gods would, and the dark side of this interests me as much as the advantages of this level of innovation.
