University brief. Illustrated cover, back cover and spine for Michelle Magorian's Goodnight Mister Tom. Submitted for the Penguin Design Awards, Children's book category.

The cover explored the tree symbolism in the names of the main characters, Mister Tom Oakley and young William Beech. The oak tree protecting and sheltering the beech sapling becomes a visual metaphor to the role Mister Tom takes as a guardian to Will.

The colour scheme seeks to bring out the sombre tones of the book, themes of loneliness and loss, set during a time of war. However, without losing the hopeful message of a found family, self-discovery and healing, reflected in the warmer tones of the searchlights and the dawn across the horizon.
Final Illustration with text. Final submission for the Penguin Design Awards.
