A fringe with big bangs

  • Steve Price

Bring Norway's first ever Fringe Festival to the masses of Bergen. Inspired by Norway’s World Wide Web Suffix, ‘.no’ we devised the perfect name for Norway’s inaugural fringe festival, which inspired the perfect anti-logo logo. A fringe festival is an arts festival featuring the very best in alternative or experimental performances and exhibitions. A fringe is about being daring, bold and different; to standout. To launch Norway’s first ever Fringe Festival we convinced our client (and ourselves) to adopt the same attitude; to be bold, brave and daring. Commissioned to create the identity, programme, strategy and marketing for all communications and social media. We came-up with the name too!

Our awareness campaign launched with a staged ‘protest’ (we enlisted the help of 100+ students) rally in the centre of Bergen. Our protestors made placards that read ‘NO FRINGE!’, ‘SAY NO FRINGE’, ‘NO Fringe Festival’ we accidentally on purpose created such a buzz that local radio and TV turned up to find out more. As did the Politi (Police). We went on to design the posters, badges, tote bags and programmes; which we designed to be the same size as an iPhoneX - so it fits in your pocket! The first ever Fringe festival in Norway sold out before the first event even started.

We loved working with Plan-B Studio. In 2017 we setup the first ever Fringe Festival in Norway. Plan-B Studio were commissioned and responsible for art direction and design as well as programme
and identity. They even recommended a comedian from London for the event! This was a completely new festival for us, Steve was a huge asset, bringing energy, ideas and inspiration. Creating a brilliant, urban ‘fringe’ style we were hoping for, with a dash of British humour. On the behalf of the festival staff of 2017, we wholeheartedly recommend Steve and his team at Plan-B Studio. A wonderful agency who always deliver with a touch of that little extra effort.
