Abstracted Landscapes

  • Katie Dyson

This collection has been inspired by nature’s patterns. Derbyshire provides us with the beauty of the Peak District, a foundation for inspiration. The natural patterns of nature alongside shadows, water ripples and architecture form the basis of my collection. The natural patterns are placed over each other and developed, creating an organised abstraction. Entwining patterns alongside layered material are brought together through laser and print techniques. A choice of unusual material, such as blackout fabric, inspired me to use this fabric for an athleisure unisex fashion collection called ‘Abstracted Landscapes’. Athleisure is clothing which can be worn for sporting activities but can also be worn every day. These abstract patterns are placed and organised within the silhouette of a pattern piece and controlled within a garment. From beginning to end, the inspiration from nature has produced a collection of garments which can be worn in the natural environment. The collection includes swimwear, leggings, sports shorts, a hoodie dress and jackets. Materials that have been used include blackout fabric, polyester fleece and polyester alaska, double faced fleece, voile, chiffon and scuba jersey. The sublimation printer was used to print digital designs and then the laser cutter was used to create textures. Layers within the blackout fabric have provided interesting patterns when lasered. Through these processes one off garments can be made which combine laser and print, positioned with consideration. Natural fabrics such as cotton do not laser as well as polyester fabrics and cannot be heat pressed in the sublimation process therefore polyester became the choice of material.
