Addictive Personality

The cartoon work was particularly interesting for me, perhaps the most interesting work I have ever undertaken. It was my second experience of making a cartoon. Making the character ‘Alex’ and altering his appearance was very fun. Based on my research, addictive personalities often move seamlessly into other forms of addiction. I wanted to make people think about themselves. Perhaps some of them have this personality type. Our tutor Clare told me that, when she looked at my cartoon, she saw the character as being like her husband. So I realised that my cartoon really worked for other people! It was great to realise that there were people around me who really had that personality type. At first, my sketches were not clear, and to be honest were not particularly exciting. Robin advised me that if I kept the same layout, it might seem quite dull. So for my final work I chose different size cartoon boxes. I think this looked much better. I chose the girlfriend method because I had to present the notion of losing someone. I was thinking about family, and the idea that there is no such thing as a substitute family. Hence, I choose the idea of changing someone’s girlfriend. The main character here changes his addiction, and loses his relationship to all of his addictions. This story is not a happy-ending, but I was happy with the work because it was presented without too dark a feeling, and had an aspect of humour as well, and this is what I wanted before moving on to the outcome.
