Advanced Higher Art & Design: The Seven Deadly Sins 2016

  • Arwen Borris

For my advanced higher project I decided to design cutlery based on the seven deadly sins.

Wrath was themed around ancient weaponry, torture devices and kitchen utensils. It became a very heavy knife with a much more threatening aesthetic focus than a functional device
Envy was inspired with green shards of glass. It became a very sharp and bitter small scoop that did not get in the way of its user allowing them to see everything around them as they ate
Gluttony had the aim to take as much as possible into its device as well as the utensil being edible, allowing the user to indulge it all. I prototyped the design by carving apples
Sloth was about ease for the user. Trying to use as little energy as possible to get food to their mouth. Fashioned around a blanket, this device became almost like a scoop that slid food into their mouth.
Pride explored fashion eras such as art deco and beauty trends that often caused more pain than done good. My design became a small sieve with a long handle. It highlighted and drew attention to the user taking part in the dining ritual whilst draining their food so they didnt actually consume anything protecting their body image
For Lust I explored the burlesque style and elegant forms
I ended up with a very elegant yet sharp and violent stiletto heel form for Lust. The user would be able to hold it in a seductive manner but pierce their food violently.
Greed was inspired by both flower clusters in nature and coins. Through development, my design became a network of pods that could be sealed and shut away so to be left un-shared. Selfishly kept by its user.
I then 3D modelled my designs on Autodesk Cad and rendered them.
These were my final designs.
