ADVICE FROM SIMONE BAIRD, WRITER, EDITOR AND FOUNDER OF CLEVER BOXER

  • Simone Baird
To celebrate International Women’s Day, we’re putting the spotlight on some of the most inspiring women in the creative industries on The Dots.

Over the rest of the week, we’ll be highlighting their work, thoughts on what it means to them to be in the creative industries, their inspirations, aspirations, iconic role models and sage words of advice.

Next up, we have Simone Baird, Writer, who was previously Head of Guardian Masterclasses and is now Editor and Founder of Clever Boxer, professional training for creatives.
What does it mean to you to be female and in the creative industries?

In the creative industries, there is a far greater value placed on collaboration which I love. You never know who you’re going to meet and what’s going to come out of it. Just be open to things changing in a heartbeat.

Do you have words of wisdom for other women looking to break into the industry?

Offer to buy people coffee and drinks. You’ll come up against hurdles that most others have successfully jumped, so get their advice. Starting a new business or project should be hugely exciting thing. It will also, at times, be hard and desperately lonely – don’t be afraid to ask for help. And when someone asks you, always, always be there. Even if it’s just over the phone for 15 minutes.

Who is your all time female creative icon?

Julia Gillard for telling Parliament how it is being a woman in politics. And, of course, The Dots founder Pip Jamieson for being the most impressive entrepreneur I’ve yet to meet. It shouldn’t be possible that one person has so much energy and talent, yet it is!
