Alfacinha for Duel Magazine
ALFACINHA is a personal project that I have been developing since the UK voted “leave” in the Brexit referendum. Being not only a citizen of Portugal but a citizen of the world this vote made me question what means to be Portuguese, to have a sense of “belonging” to a country and identify with a specific culture and language.
Coming from a diverse family background myself, these three roots Portuguese, Cabo Verde and Mozambique made my upbringing incredibly unique. These influences made me question who am I?, where I come from? and how I feel when I say “I am Portuguese!”
That’s how ALFACINHA came about, a project that will takes us to square one, our roots, my roots.
The first reference to this expression, Alfacinha, came around the XIX century in “Viagens na Minha Terra”, written by Almeida Garrett. If you are originally from Lisbon you are an Alfacinha - such a Portuguese expression.
This is my my take on what means to be a Portuguese woman in today’s Lisbon - I am an Alfacinha!
