An Alternative Woodlands

“An Alternative Woodlands is designed to give the audience a view of woodlands they observe everyday in an alternative light. Highlighting the intricate beauty of the Woodland Trust’s ancient wildlife, this experimental projection takes you on a journey form forest expanses, right through to the delicate detail”.

For my project I worked towards a client brief from the Woodland Trust. They were looking for a way to get more recognition for their ancient woodlands so that they can keep them preserved and gain support. They wanted to raise awareness through design, digital technology and photography. I wanted to create an installation that explores four different angles the trust have suggested;

• Experiencing the woodlands without going,

• A piece that’s interacts with people,

• Raise awareness,

• Include moving image.

Therefore, I created an installation that combines all of these with using visuals and sound. My main aim was to give the audience a view of woodlands they observe everyday in an alternative light.

The idea was to create an immersive installation that brings the woodlands to the public in rural areas. To do this, I hoped to create a series of abstract animations from still images and footage of the woodland trust woods, and project this in an immersive setting. The reason for doing this is that by animating photographs and footage, you are bringing them to life in a sense, like I hoped to do with the woodlands in rural areas. As the woodlands is such a large and open area I wanted to incorporate this into my project and hence why I done a large scale piece instead of an oculus for example. To expand on this I also wanted to use sound in the installation. This will use music that is fitting for the piece, and that helps create an environment that gets the audience thinking
