Apollo Distraught

  • Alexandra Crone
Apollo Distraught is a dance piece choreographed by Richard Alston for The Rambert Dance Company in 1982. It relies heavily on balletic movement styles and is danced to Nigel Osborne’s Flute Concerto. Alston has cast Apollo as a female with 3 male muses as teachers and 6 female chorus, a subversion of gender roles from Balanchine’s iconic Apollo. This costume re-design (done in collaboration with The Rambert Company Archives) creates a modern interpretation of classic Greek sculpture, placing emphasis on the musculature and drape of cloth. Apollo herself shines like the sun with the muses and chorus emulating this in their clothing.
