Album Campaign - Ash Walker, Aquamarine

  • Ella Preda
  • Sophie Bass

Ash Walker’s third album - Aquamarine - was released on Night Time Stories in July 2019, with IXCHEL heading up the creative direction and management of the album.

‘A heavyweight astral shower of rhythm and vibes’, Aquamarine is a projection and culmination of all he’s absorbed, a cosmic explosion of sound and colour, rhythm, shape and patterns. The arrival of an unassuming dreamer now projecting his unique flavour of expression. ‘Aquamarine’ is the take-off of this audial spaceship, a sound discovered in the grooves of thousands of records, united in one.

Heading up the art direction, IXCHEL worked with Ash to create a retro-futuristic visual world for him to inhabit drawing from the heavy 60’s and 70’s influences on Ash’s music, while also nodding to his innovative approach to creating music.

Resident illustrator Sophie Bass was brought in to create the album cover, tasked by Ash to envision him and his band as underwater creatures - a challenging but fun brief. Ash appears as a dreadlocked octopus, playing the melodica - a nod to the heavy dub influences Ash draws on. Sophie also makes use of a contrasting colour palette, highlighting the lightness and fun in this record.

Ash appeared in a Behind the Record video, working with the BERLIN directors team and Nighttime Stories. The aesthetic in this video is an extension of the retro-futurism art direction concept that IXCHEL created for the release, focusing on analogue equipment personal to Ash, and significant within that visual world.
