Barbican Typeface

  • Mairi Brascoupe
Barbican is a modular display typeface created using the geometric shapes of the Barbican’s brutalist architecture. The design process began with an architectural tour of the Barbican Estate, and with the collection of photos documenting different shapes, textures, colours and patterns seen at the Barbican. From there, I created a scaffolding for the typeface that mimicked the architecture and used this as a guide to design the upper and lower cases, as well as the numerals. This typeface could be used for special events, advertisements, and internal documents for the Barbican.
