Beckett & Bacon

This feature-length film follows renowned photographer John Minihan in search for two of the great Irish exiles of the 20th century, Samuel Beckett and Francis Bacon. A journey from Ireland to London and then Paris that ultimately leads to the discovery of his own artistic truth. John was the only photographer to take pictures of both men when they were alive and hoped to one day capture these two artistic icons together. In a successful career this was the one ambition John was never able to fulfil. In this film he returns to the Paris of his imagination, the Paris of Beckett and Bacon in an attempt to unite these two giants of Irish artistic life. Through John's photographic eye and his trusty Roliflex camera we encounter the art of the writer and the painter anew. Through a process of memory and imagining we see through John's eyes why these two men represent two distinct but similar visions, who both reached into the very core of the human condition in a way that most artists seldom do.
