Big Smoke Wildlife

Inspired by urban wildlife, I set about creating fabric designs based on parakeets, pigeons and foxes - three increasingly controversial species.
I am moving forward from my BA into a MA in Journalism, and therefore wanted to introduce an element of storytelling into my project - to give context, educate, entertain and bring the animals to life. To do this, I wrote and produced a newspaper (Big Smoke Times) and a website - accessible here.
My newspaper separates fact from fiction, playing on people's perceptions and myths about these animals - for example, the myth that parakeets exist in London because Jimi Hendrix released a pair and the truth that foxes actually eat less out of our bins than we think. The creatures themselves tell the stories - giving them a voice for once, in an attempt to get the public to see the city as less of a human domain and more of a shared one.
The website includes an embedded digital version of the paper. It also includes written animal profiles and quotes from people I spoke with about these species. Ranging from the spiteful and the scathing to the funny and sentimental, these quotes speak the truth about our relationship with urban wildlife.
