Boardies Fabric Designs
This project was a competition entry for Boardies Swimwear, uploaded to Artsthread. The brief was to create a series of 3 repeating patterns to be printed onto men’s shorts, t shirts and stickers from a selected theme. The company specified that they wanted something different, outside of the box. So I created a series of 3 prints based around the location of the company. The company is run in London, UK, but they create their apparel in Bali, Indonesia. So I chose to pick animals you can only find in Indonesia, the theme I worked with is “ocean vibes”.
Nudibranch Paisley
The animal used in this print is a species of Nudibranch which is a variation of Sea Snail. There are over 3,000 species of this snail and they’re all really bright and come in some very odd shapes. I really loves this one as it has a pre-historic element to it, with all of the extended tentacles. The idea for the paisley print came as soon as the animal was drawn, I usually wrap my illustrations in a black line, but this looked so delicate I wanted to keep that element in my work.
Nudibranch Specimens
This print was inspired by the Previous, as all of the snails were so different I wanted to create more than just one, also the different shapes and colours work well as a print. I chose the Nudibranch originally because of its obscuresness, usually in clothing companies when they create an ocean themed design, they use starfish or dolphins because they are easily recognised and in today’s pop culture. However they wanted something really different and outside of the box, so that’s why these were perfect.
Seahorses
Seahorses are beautiful creatures, and again they come in all shapes and sizes. Something that I really liked from my other prints was the change in colours and the contrast it brings to the background. To create this print I drew one detailed seahorse, and altered it through ProCreate to make 3 different coloured versions. Seahorses are easily recognisable but they aren’t often used in clothing so again these were perfect.
