I'LL SLEEP WHEN YOU SLEEP
BRIEF
Design and write a book about an inspirational person in your life. My book entails the life of Thulisile Nzimande- Anna Kabana.
VISUAL TREATMENT
White came through Anna’s descriptions of her fondest and saddest memories. Examples of these memories are: her father's emphasis on dressing neatly in white, the white Anna wears to church as she is apart of the Shembe community (a Zulu religious group) and her description of the white linen that is placed over someone’s body when they die as a sign of respect. The use of white overall represents innocence, purity, kindness and the afterlife.
Along with the colour white, the treatment of the layout followed suit- minimalist. Through Anna’s stories I could almost feel the textures of what she was describing. An example of this is her description of the pap and steak meals her father use to make. This triggered my exercution style- close-up photography. I wanted to carry forward her descriptive narrative visually.
BLURB
“My sister you haven’t slept”
“My Brother I’ll sleep when you sleep”
Anna’s brother uttered this to her as he closed his eyes for the last time. He could now rest knowing she was by his side, holding his hand.
This is a story about a courageous, kind and strong willed woman, Thulisile Nzimande- Anna. Anna is a caregiver and has graciously helped, loved and guided many loved ones in their last hours. For this reason she is a woman who deserves admiration.
Wathint’ba Fazi, Wathint’mbokodo.
You strike a woman- you strike a rock.
Anna has experienced pain, heartache and struggle-
That has never stopped her.
And it never will.
