Botanical Tassels

  • Alison Cole
Botanical tassels is a project exploring the theme of plants with unusual and tasselled-like appearances, such as cacti and succulents. Initial inspiration was taken from traditional crafts of latch hook and carpet tufting. From these techniques, similar visual appearances can be linked to organic forms and plants from inside Kew Gardens’ greenhouses. Along with a contemporary intake on tufting and latch hook, these surface manipulative techniques are accompanied  with hand print, heat transfer and small amounts of embellishments and targeted towards an Autumn/ Winter womenswear collection for a younger audience. Bright colours, block shapes, compositions of repeat and placement designs are important visual elements within this collection and a wide range of different materials such as denim, sports mesh, faux suede and various yarns are used.
