Central Saint Martins 2018 Personal Project

This is a VR experience about Greek Tragedy and cyber bullying. In the piece, I investigate the impact of viral videos in todays society through the story of Tiziana Cantone: an Italian woman who committed suicide after a private video of her became viral worldwide.
I chose for the sculpture to be gold, playing on the metaphore of the golden calf, for building which, Jewish in the old testament, gave away their most precious jewellers. I believe that in the same way, we create and destroy those idols, giving away our most precious goods: data and time.
The stars in the sky are an approximation of the number of times (200,000) the video has been downloaded on the day of Tiziana’s process. Wondering around the scene, you can hear different sounds. Those have been extracted from some of the video parodies or news posted and shared while she was alive. By directly looking at the big spheres in the sky, you can bring them closer. They stream some of the video parodies posted online.
The Internet can give us the illusion that our online behaviour has no consequence in the real world. The medium of Virtual Reality was chosen for its ability to similarly create intangible and theatrical scenes that disappear once the screen switches off.
