Brisbane's "Ugliest" Building

  • Kayra Ercan

Often described as Brisbane’s 'ugliest building’, the Brisbane Transit Centre is a product of an era that under Joh Bjelke-Petersen witnessed the demolition of countless heritage buildings in the name of development. A remnant of Brisbane’s 1980s Brutalist public buildings, the 30+ year old icon awaits the same fate that met its predecessors as it is scheduled for demolition to make way for the new Cross River Rail in 2020. This short film acts as a visual archive, capturing the unnoticed stoic beauty of the building whilst also questioning whether the city’s Brutalist past may have unintentionally become a new generation of heritage buildings worth protecting.
